Starburst Galaxy IC 10

Explanation: Lurking behind dust and stars near the plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, IC 10 is a mere 2.3 million light-years distant. Even though its light is dimmed by intervening dust, the irregular dwarf galaxy still shows off vigorous star-forming regions that shine with a telltale reddish glow in this colorful skyscape. In fact, also a member of the Local Group of galaxies, IC 10 is the closest known starburst galaxy. Compared to other Local Group galaxies, IC 10 has a large population of newly formed stars that are massive and intrinsically very bright, including a luminous X-ray binary star system thought to contain a black hole. Located within the boundaries of the northern constellation Cassiopeia, IC 10 is about 5,000 light-years across.

 

Spiegazione: in agguato dietro la polvere e le stelle vicino al piano della nostra Via Lattea, IC 10 è distante solo 2,3 milioni di anni luce. Anche se la sua luce è attenuata dalla polvere interposta, la galassia nana irregolare mostra ancora vigorose regioni di formazione stellare che brillano di un bagliore rossastro rivelatore in questo colorato panorama del cielo. Infatti, anch'essa membro del Gruppo Locale di galassie, IC 10 è la galassia starburst più vicina conosciuta. Rispetto ad altre galassie del Gruppo Locale, IC 10 ha una vasta popolazione di stelle di nuova formazione che sono massicce e intrinsecamente molto luminose, incluso un luminoso sistema stellare binario a raggi X che si ritiene contenga un buco nero. Situata entro i confini della costellazione settentrionale di Cassiopea, IC 10 ha un diametro di circa 5.000 anni luce.

Una galassia starburst (o galassia dello starburst) è una galassia in cui il processo di formazione stellare è eccezionalmente violento, se comparato al normale tasso di formazione nella gran parte delle galassie.
