NGC 3628, also known as the Hamburger Galaxy

 

Sideways Galaxy NGC 3628

 

Explanation: Dark dust lanes cutting across the middle of this gorgeous island universe strongly hint that NGC 3628 is a spiral galaxy seen sideways. About 35 million light-years away in the northern springtime constellation Leo, NGC 3628 also bears the distinction of being the only member of the well known Leo triplet of galaxies not in Charles Messier's famous catalog. Otherwise similar in size to our Milky Way galaxy, the disk of NGC 3628 is clearly seen to fan out near the galaxy's edge. A faint arm of material also extends up and to the left in this deep view of the region. The distorted shape and tidal tail suggest that NGC 3628 is interacting gravitationally with the other spiral galaxies in the Leo triplet, M66 and M65.

 

Spiegazione: le strisce di polvere scura che tagliano il centro di questo splendido universo insulare suggeriscono fortemente che NGC 3628 sia una galassia a spirale vista di lato. A circa 35 milioni di anni luce di distanza nella costellazione primaverile settentrionale del Leone, NGC 3628 ha anche la particolarità di essere l'unico membro del noto tripletto del Leone di galassie non presente nel famoso catalogo di Charles Messier. Per il resto simile per dimensioni alla nostra galassia, la Via Lattea, il disco di NGC 3628 è chiaramente visibile mentre si apre a ventaglio vicino al bordo della galassia. Un debole braccio di materiale si estende anche verso l'alto e verso sinistra in questa profonda vista della regione. La forma distorta e la coda di marea suggeriscono che NGC 3628 interagisca gravitazionalmente con le altre galassie a spirale nel tripletto del Leone, M66 e M65.

 

NOTA : Una delle piu' belle serate di sempre al Rifugio Fabbro vicino a Casera Razzo , un seeing da paura e pochissima umidita . Alla mattina quando ho smontato il Set up non c'era rugiada  , solo un  fantastico sole .
